How do secret societies recruit members?

Understanding membership · 6 min read

Invitation, sponsorship and open application — the three ways private organisations take in new members, and how Illuminati applications work.

Three models

Private organisations take in members one of three ways. Invitation: existing members identify someone and approach them. Sponsorship: a candidate applies but requires an existing member to vouch. Open application: anyone may apply and is assessed on their own merits.

Most Australian Masonic lodges use a sponsorship model. Many professional circles use invitation. The Illuminati uses open application.

Why open application

Merit above birth is a founding principle, and invitation-only recruitment quietly reproduces whoever is already inside. Open application means an applicant in a regional town with no connections is assessed on the same basis as someone with a famous surname.

It also removes the recruiter's incentive to flatter or pressure anyone. Nobody is chased.

What genuine recruitment never does

It never demands money before assessment. It never pressures you with a deadline. It never asks you to conceal the decision from your family. It never requires you to break the law or renounce your faith. It never approaches you first through a direct message promising wealth.

Every one of those is the signature of a scam using the name, and they are common enough that treating them as automatic disqualifiers will protect you.

How the process actually runs

You read the principles and rules first, so you know what is being asked. You complete the official application honestly. It is reviewed. You are contacted through the details you provided. Acceptance leads to instruction in the principles before anything else.

Honesty at the application stage matters more than impressiveness. An inflated application is a failed one.

Applying from Australia

Australian applicants use the same official portal regardless of state. There is no local officer to find, no fee to pay and no intermediary who can accelerate a decision.
